The Second Layer, Complete

Ta-da! You now have, in your possession, a complete set of 100 permanent peg words. These guys will be your life-long friends, helping you remember lists of up to 100 items that have no logical connection by forming visual mental associations between the pictures suggested by the peg words and a mental image of the item you need to remember. Later on, you can recall items in any order by mentally going from the number of an item to the permanent peg word and then to the item.

You also have practiced phantasmagoria, not for remembering lists of items, but for remembering strings of numbers. Here, you break numbers into pairs, find words that sound like the permanent peg words, as far as the consonant sounds, and then constructing a mental movie that allows you to recall the string in order. Later on, we will build on this technique for completing the card-memory trick and for memorizing prose verbatim.

For convenience, here is a table with all the two-digit permanent pegs you have memorized. Instead of counting sheep at night to fall asleep, just go over this table in your mind. Refresh it every couple of months, or more often if you like. Make sure to keep the images Personal, Exaggerated, Colorful, Absurd, Moving, and Emotional.

Now, for phantasmagorias, here is a table with three suggested soundalike words for each of the permanent peg words. I do not suggest that you memorize these. Instead, I suggest that you practice coming up with new ones on your own, using your imagination. There are many, many more words that sound alike to the 90 above and the 10 permanent pegs you learned for the first layer of the system. My personal treasury of words has 2414 entries for the 101 numbers from 0 to 100.

Coming up with these soundalikes at conversational speed is the secret to remembering strings of numbers, like phone numbers and account numbers, as fast as you hear them. This is great exercise for the imagination. Since this system is a partnership between memory and imagination, it is at least as important to exercise the imagination.
